This is the abstract of one very famous training in AIESEC, delivered by Nadiyka Lyubimova. I was llikng through my files in the folder Talent Education, and here it is!
It might answer the stucking questions in yor head. Hope it will:)
How many aiesecers are unhappy with their AIESEC work? How many do you know?
The thing with AIESEC is - you cant be unhappy with it, because its working in one of the best organizations, where ppl work for good cause and change lifes. So some people fake being happy and others are simply showing the opposite: they are sick of exchange, they are tired, they find excuse to miss the meeting, they don’t go for conferences, they are ready to exchange AIESEC for low-responsibility corporate job … They feel underappreciated and stressed. What do we say to them? We say - if you don’t like it, probably its not aligned with your life goals and its just not for you... Can these people bring results at all?
People can bring results. When they are happy with what they are doing! What makes people happy to do their job? Using their strengths.
Strengths
Every person has his/her strength. How do we find it? Its not just what you're good at. You might have a natural talent, but its just an area, where your more specific strengths can be developed. Strengths come from talent combined with knowledge gained from study and skill gained from practice.
How to recognize them? Easy - when you use your strengths you feel energized, you look forward to that work. When you use weaknesses - you feel stressed and weak.
Strengths can also change depending on where u use them, but not the talent areas. Strength is usually a sentence, not a word!
Notice your strengths and then act - adjust your work, step by step, to use more of strengths than weaknesses.
CHANGE YOUR SELF
How do you motivate yourself at work? How to find your inner source of energy at work to be truly happy in your every day work?
First of all…
- Search for a positive core of your organization.
Ask your self and your members simple questions to remember why are they here and what strengths they are using here. What is so powerful about relationships of your member and AIESEC.
What is AIESEC at its best? What do you most value about yourself and AIESEC? What did you already achieve here? If you were not there, what would be missing? When do you feel most alive and energetic on the job? What dreams do you have for AIESEC’s future life?
Keeping purpose in mind - creates energy for work!
- Reflect on ways to use strengths effectively
In world-wide surveys of more than 10 million employees, Gallup (Rath, 2007) has found that only about a third can strongly agree with the following statement: “At work, I have the opportunity to do what I do best every day.” Can you and your members say that?
The alignment between strengths and jobs is directly related to motivation, retention and results.
- Practise reframing
"This is GOOD, because...", instead of "This is BAD, because..."
CHANGE YOUR TEAM
- See the holistic picture: who has what strengths, ask people to define those, see how you can reallocate tasks to use members' strengths better.
- See how you can work on strengths that no one has in a team.
- To improve team performance, at work say at least 3 positive comments for each negative comment.
- To improve operational results, say “thank you” and use gratitude
Pollay described that researchers had found that waiters who write “Thank you” on the check receive a 11% higher tip than waiters who don’t.
